Be Yourself
Plus: A Friday Night Folk Recap & Performative Reading
This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Ethan Mitchell for the Hard Folk podcast. What really stood out to me was his voice. I’m not talking about his singing voice, although he does exude a certain vintage authenticity. What I mean is that it’s evident in Ethan’s songwriting that he knows who he is and doesn’t shy away from that. And really, that’s the most important lesson any aspiring songwriter can learn. It’s taken me years to develop my voice and the fact that Ethan has done this at such a relatively young age is truly impressive. Be authentic, be yourself - thats the key to achieving artistic success.

Friday Night Folk:
The 4th edition of CKCU Presents Friday Night Folk was an amazing show! Lefty McRighty & Jack Pine played great and our MC’s Loch Nisse Monster and Katy Shnier did a great job as hosts for the evening, keeping the audience engaged and entertained between sets.
Performative Reading:
For years, I’ve been an avid reader, with e-books being my preferred format, but I’ve recently re-discovered good, old fashioned analog books. Now that my kids are learning to read, I think it’s important that they see me with my nose inside a physical book, rather than reading a digital version on my phone. And when they get older, I’ll have amassed a library of literature for them to explore. I do enjoy the minimalist ethos of a digital bookshelf but you can’t lend someone an e-book after you’ve finished reading it. Books & knowledge are meant to be shared and anything I can do to encourage that enthusiasm with my kids is worth the extra real estate that piles & stacks of books take up over the years.
